Putting a bag through its paces & a chance to win

Today, being a sunny and windy day I decided to wash-test one of my popular linen/cotton messenger bags. I haven't done that for a while and I think it's good practice to see how products will stand up to normal use.

First I put it into a laundry net just to keep the strap from tangling around too much.

A cold wash is recommended for linen/cotton blend so I went ahead and washed it on the hot cycle since I am sure a lot of people regularly wash with hot water. (I rarely do from an environmental standpoint)

I used ordinary washing powder, Ariel, and chose the standard cycle.

My machine uses "beat and wash" technology which is an environmental choice since it uses very little water. Instead of filling the drum with water it flops the washing over on top of itself to "beat" it clean with the minimum amount of water possible. Everything comes out very crinkled. This bag was no exception.

I hung it outside, partly in the shade, and went off to get lunch. I left it outside for about twenty or thirty minutes since I did not want it to get too dry. I had already decided I would iron it "damp".

I set my iron to the highest temperature then ironed it directly on the print. The fabric was still damp so a bit loose. I ironed it from the center out. I could have spent longer really pressing the creases out but I think it looks almost as good as new just how it is.

Verdict: Mee a Bee bags are machine washable and easy-care. If you think you'll be washing it frequently I still recommend a cold handwash to minimize wrinkling and wear.

So this bag is not "new" anymore. It is up for grabs in a giveaway.

  1. Hi Jacqui,
I LOVE your stuff and was just looking at purchasing this bag the other day (but got sidetracked and forgot what i was doing - lol) so i am glad it prompted me to enter.... I have subscribed to your RSS feed and my least favourite chore is definitely mopping the floor (hence it rarely gets done!) our floorboards have a black/walnut stain so are very dark (japanese theme in house) and so they show up EVERYTHING.... arghhhhh - with a 30kg Border Collie who likes to hang out inside, it is the bain of my life at the moment. Thanks for the opp. to enter your comp.

I have to say my least favorite chore is vacumming! I have two kids(5 yr. old and 18 mth. old) and it never fails that whenever I vacuum, in less than 10 minutes theres toys, crumbs (from I don't know where..?!) all over the floor! So I'm vacumming almost 2 or 3 times a day! :P Thanks for this opportunity for a great giveaway... your stuff is co cute! :D

  7. I'm following you too...
Love the crazy, opposite washing instruction test you performed.

My worse chore in the world is washing the shower tiles. I hate it to the point of leaving it so long that I make extra work for myself.

  11. Seriously Jacqui,
How can people pick a fave household chore with so many great ones to chose from.
Ironing of course would be a front runner, but maybe to cliche?
There nothing like ploughing through Sunday dishes for 6 people, especially if the sink is all gunk up and you have to actually put your hand and remove.
Obviously sweeping and hoovering are so 'yesterday' aren't they?
There is the general losing battle of 'tidying', 'getting organised' another top dog, but all in all I think , the chore ( if you can call it that) that brings me the most JOY, hymn singing JOY, would be cleaning the toilet with 3 blind males in the house. ;)

  12. Hi there,

I loved reading your washing experience, put a smile on my face.
I'm following you on twitter and your blog.

I think I hate ironing most, as it gives me a sore back!!!
And just getting the ironing board out and the HUGE pile of stuff that cries out to be ironed - just thinking about it...
So I usually watch the telly (desperate housewives is a favourite - though not even Bree seems to do the ironing, hm...)

Anyway, I love the messenger bag and am off to have a look at your shop

    Have a good Monday
    Nina

    Hope all well with you.

  15. Superb bag Jacqui!
My favorite task would be feeding the cat. Pedro loves his dinner and trots around in circles while I fill his bowl. We go through the same ritual everyday...
