I think they originally called it "midori no hi" because the old emperor was a strong environmentalist who loved nature. Some people claimed that calling the day "Showa no hi" was a sign of a resurgence of strong Japanese nationalistic feeling. I have to admit I thought it was a bit weird when I noticed the change last year and don't really understand why they bothered but they did change it.
